José Martínez to Lead Bilingual Story Time at Reading Public Library Book Fair

Journalist and author José Martínez will lead a bilingual story time and children’s activity during the Story Lane Book Fair & Market at Reading Public Library on Saturday, October 3.

The 30-minute program will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the library’s Children’s Department. Families are invited to participate in a reading and creative activity inspired by Martínez’s latest publication, Your English Is Great, But…: A Bilingual Coloring & Activity Book for Kids.

The children’s edition builds upon themes explored in Martínez’s memoir, Your English Is Great, But…: A Life Between Languages, Cities, and Grief. Through coloring pages, writing prompts and bilingual activities, the book encourages children to celebrate their identities, languages, families and dreams.

The event continues Martínez’s work connecting journalism, storytelling and education. Born in Cartagena, Colombia, he has built a career reporting in both English and Spanish while sharing his experiences as an immigrant, bilingual professional and author with students and families.

Martínez currently works as a reporter and anchor at WFMZ-TV. His previous experience includes CBS News Bay Area, NY1 Noticias and El Diario de Nueva York. He has received two Emmy Awards for his journalistic work.

During the Story Lane program, children will have an opportunity to listen, color and share their own creativity. Martínez will also have copies of his books available for purchase and signing before and after the activity.

The appearance follows a series of literacy and community events where Martínez has introduced young readers to the idea that speaking more than one language is not an obstacle but a source of strength.
