Martínez will share his journey across languages, cities and cultures before leading a conversation with Alvernia students
READING, Pa. — September 14, 2026 — Emmy Award-winning bilingual journalist and author José Martínez will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Latinos Unidos celebration at Alvernia University on Friday, September 25.
The event will take place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Francis Hall and will bring together students, community leaders, artists and residents from Reading and the greater Berks County region in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.
During his keynote, Martínez will reflect on identity, language, belonging and the importance of finding—and using—one’s voice. The second portion of his appearance will feature an onstage conversation with three Alvernia students, connecting the themes of his remarks with their experiences, challenges and aspirations.
Born in Cartagena, Colombia, Martínez has built a journalism career spanning New York City, California and Pennsylvania. He currently works as a reporter and anchor at WFMZ-TV. His previous experience includes reporting for CBS News Bay Area, NY1 Noticias and El Diario de Nueva York.
Martínez is the author of Your English Is Great, But…: A Life Between Languages, Cities, and Grief, a memoir exploring immigration, ambition, language, loss and the search for belonging. His work has earned multiple Emmy Awards and other professional recognition for reporting that centers Latino communities and elevates stories frequently overlooked by mainstream media.
Latinos Unidos was created in response to community interest in meaningful university programming that brings people together through education, culture and shared experiences. The annual celebration recognizes community leaders and champions while highlighting local artists, performers and the contributions of the region’s Latino community.
