Emmy-Winning Journalist and Author José Martínez to Host Book Talk at Reading Public Library

READING, PA — Emmy Award–winning journalist and author José Martínez will host a community book talk and conversation centered on language, identity, and belonging on Tuesday, January 13 at 5:30 PM at the Reading Public Library — Main Branch.

The free public event is built around Martínez’s memoir, Your English Is Great, But…: A Life Between Languages, Cities, and Grief, a reflection on growing up between cultures and how language shapes memory, migration, grief, and personal identity.

The evening will include a short reading from the book, followed by a conversation and Q&A with the audience.

“Language is memory, migration, and emotion — wrapped in syllables,” Martínez says. “This event is about creating space for people to reflect on their own stories, their families, and the languages — spoken or unspoken — that shaped them.”

A bilingual writer and storyteller, Martínez’s work focuses on elevating underrepresented voices and exploring the emotional dimensions of everyday life. His reporting and writing bridge journalism, memoir, and community storytelling, with a focus on culture, identity, and belonging.

The event is designed to be warm, reflective, and accessible — welcoming readers, writers, students, educators, and community members of all backgrounds.
