Inside the Book: José Martínez on Grief, Identity, and Your English Is Great, But…

Q&A: Get to Know the Voice Behind the Book

Q: Why did you write Your English Is Great, But…?

J: I didn’t set out to write this book. I thought I was going to write about journalism—about breaking news, cameras, deadlines. But when I sat down, what poured out was something far more personal. This book is a collection of moments that shaped me: grief, joy, belonging, language, and everything in between.

Q: What does the title mean?

J: It comes from a comment many of us have heard: “Your English is great, but…” There’s always a “but” that follows. It’s a phrase that captures what it’s like to live in between cultures, between languages, between expectations. For me, it was never just about grammar. It was about identity.

Q: Is this a memoir?

J: Not exactly. It’s a collection of microstories—bilingual reflections that move through different cities and stages of my life. Some read like poems. Others like confessions. It’s definitely not linear. Because neither is identity. Or healing.

Q: Who is this book for?

J: Anyone who’s ever juggled languages, careers, family expectations. Anyone who’s felt too much or not enough. It’s for immigrants. For children of immigrants. For those navigating love, loss, and everything that doesn’t fit neatly into a headline.

Q: What themes does the book explore?

J: Language, grief, mental health, queerness, family, immigration, and belonging. But also humor. Joy. Music. My dog, Joe. I wanted the book to feel like sitting with a friend who gets it.

Q: How do you hope readers feel after reading it?

J: Seen. Affirmed. Maybe even healed a little. I hope they laugh, cry, and close the book feeling like they have a new friend who’s walked some of the same roads.

Q: Where can people buy the book?

J: It’s available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats. Signed copies are also available at selected events and independent bookstores. [Insert link or shop info here.]

Q: Are there events or readings coming up?

J: Yes! I’ll be sharing updates on Instagram and through my newsletter, Café con José. Readers can also visit josemartineznews.com for the latest events, appearances, and press features.

Q: Anything else you want readers to know?

J: Just thank you. This book came from a very tender place. I hope it meets you wherever you are—and reminds you that your story matters too.
